Dear Fans of Love and Hip Hop,
Did you know that each year, over 1.6 million people worldwide lose their lives to violence? Violence is among the leading causes of death for people aged 15-44 and, as a result, many victims of violence suffer major injuries and a range of physical, sexual, reproductive, and mental health problems. As a product of a childhood where domestic violence was ubiquitous, I cannot emphasize enough how severely I condemn this behavior.
In an attempt to create verisimilitude and generate ratings, VH1 has cut, pasted, and edited all eight episodes of Love and Hip Hop with the intention to depict the cast as impish sensationalists. What you, the viewer, is enjoying is the result of master manipulation. Untold stories, half truths, and complete lies have been misconstrued into 30 minutes of pieced-together mendacity to entertain you. The mere veracity of the show is that the plots that unfold had been precisely choreographed in advance of taping. In return, the viewer is led to misapprehensions, and is duped into believing that a “he-said, she-said” argument, for example, is authentic.
What was not feigned, however, was premeditated violence and a prescience to inflict bodily harm. This was evident both behind the scenes while taping and now, playing out on screen. Unbeknownst to the audience, VH1 producers play a large part in provoking perilous actions, many that are not seen on television, leading to completely dangerous situations for anyone involved.
Violence has impacted my life on a personal level, claiming the lives of several loved ones. I denounce violence and assault of any kind and are firm believers that problems can be solved with words, not fists, weapons, or abuse, especially not for the purpose of garnering ratings and for amusement’s sake. Concurrently, it is insulting to those who have been impacted by violence and egregious behavior of this nature should be castigated. It is not entertainment, comedy, or a solution for anyone. It is also a crime. There is simply no excuse for hurting another human being.
That’s the reality.
