VH1access Interview: Shakyra (You're Cut Off 2)

Here is is my exclusive interview of 2011 and it is with Shakyra from You're Cut Off 2. She is the girl that dropped out on the show. We discuss her thoughts on Laura Baron and the other girls and if she reconciled with her boyfriend.

VH1access: Hey Shakyra how are you?

Shakyra: Hey Luv! I am FanTabulous! Thanks so much for this interview.

VH1access: Watching the premiere you were really pissed off that you were "cut off"

Shakyra: Umm of course I was… even more so confused because I was cut off from the finer things in life that I worked hard for! As you saw in the premiere, my "benefactor" was the last to be revealed. I was nauseous trying to figure out who the heck in my family would lie and set me up like that!

VH1access: Your boyfriend "cut you off" have you spoken to him since the taping of the show?

Shakyra: Let's see… as soon as I got my personal belongings back… I cursed him out, saying things that I'm too embarrassed to admit. We had been together for a while so my heart was broken and I felt like I had been humiliated on national television… I am a bonafide BRAT but I am willing to admit when I'm wrong so I apologized. We had a very long, emotional chat. Like the rest of the girls that chose to stay on the show, he thought that THIS reality show would be an awesome meal ticket. He still claims that he had my best interest at heart. Do I buy that? Being portrayed as a gold-digger is probably the worst thing you can say about me. Perfect candidate for Charm school, maybe but not Princess Rehab...Can I be a b*tch, am I demanding, can I be a diva at times, do I want my way ALL of the time? … the answer is YES. But a mooch I am NOT! Yes I do expect the man I am dating to go above and beyond. I'm a lady… you can blame my dad and my FOUR brothers for that!

VH1access: One of the bonus videos of VH1 you said to Aimee that you did want to be in the show because the germs and the mold.

Shakyra: OMG that place was unbelievably filthy. I wont mention things that weren't shown due to editing but I will say this… You can not put a price on MY pride, my involvement was based on a lie. I felt like we were being set up for failure… the main characters of a comedy and the joke was on us. I think the other girls were equally appalled about the living situation but Lord bless them for trying to stay and be positive NOT because they wanted a life-coach but because initially we came to LA to shine! I respect every last one of them for that now but at the time I thought we could have improved the situation by taking a stand collectively.

VH1access: One of the main controversies right now is with you and Laura Baron. You even made a video calling her out. What are your issues with her?

Shakyra: You know… considering how pissed I was for being what I call a mis-cast: I came home to NY, dealt with my ex and got back on my modeling grind. I have reframed from saying anything negative about ANYONE on that show. The interview I did with the NY Daily News was a positive piece… no juice, no moldy dirt! LOL But when I saw the video Laura made, I had to go straight BROOKLYN and the gloves had to come OFF! Laura has NEVER met me a day in her life! We have never even had a convo… She said "You're Cut Off" & "Here's the house." Man I wish I would have met her… I would have given her the top bunk and told her to stay for dinner (the girl's made "murder burgers" the first night). So for her to say so much about me, Oh hell no! I have no beef with her what so ever but until we meet, I want my name out of her mouth!

VH1access: What are yours thoughts on the other girls? Who do you like and dislike?

Shakyra: You are trying to get me in trouble huh? LOL
Well I'll use this section to be positive… If there is ONE thing I want people to take note of it's the fact that Aimee is the only one that tried to get me to stay. I know it looks like we were arguing but she's real and when you care you show emotion. There was no black girl Tyra/Naomi war going on. We got along pretty ok. Everyone else in the house knew I had a strong personality, of course they wanted me to go… more air time! There are a couple of girls (not important enough for me to mention) that should do as I advised their life-coach… and get my name outta their mouths!

VH1access: What your thoughts on Jennifer getting arrested for DUI?

Shakyra: OOOOOooooh Jenn! Well my thoughts are I'm sure as hell glad Laura's services were FREE! Homegirl is all over twitter about how she's shopping with Laura… decorating with Laura… having dinner with Laura, Well where in the hell was Laura when she needed a designated driver? In the hopes of appearing on a season 3, Jenn told me not to blame Laura. So lets go with that for now! I just think its funny how we were stripped of damn near everything, including literature BUT there was alcohol in the house! Does that sound like rehab to you? I prayed for Jenn that night because I did notice her ex-roomies posting the mugshots everywhere…

VH1acess: Are you hoping for a reunion show?

Shakyra: A reunion would be fun… considering the girls seem to be exactly the way I left them when I dragged that heavy ass trunk out of that hell hole! It would be nice to see them again. I would love to meet Laura… for the very first time! You know, a warm hand shake "Hi I'm Shakyra... and you are?" She was cleary unaware that I'm a true New Yorker… say what you have to say about me to my face. But I guess she was up in a hotel somewhere while I was catching a case about the soiled carpet and moldy fridge! What an insult to "the average American family." Again it was Aimee who tried to console me, as in the case of Jenn... where was the life-coach?!?

VH1access: What are you doing now since the show?

Shakyra: I am living boo! Doing what I love… walking runways and posing for the camera now flick, flick! LOL Modeling has always been my dream, I feel blessed to be making a living doing something that I actually love. I was modeling before this show… But honey "success is the best revenge." So when I got back to NY I was not playing! An ad that I shot before I left for the show was finally in stores when I got home. You could not be downtown BK, on Jamaica Ave, or on 125th St. without seeing THIS face (NY natives know what I mean)… That felt amazing!
I also have a new accessories line coming in the spring! Vogue4Vanity, updates on my webpage… www.shakyralashae.com (plug) LMAO

VH1access: Last but not least, how did you get the nickname Vanity?

Shakyra: I LIVE in the mirror… even my screen protector on my phone is a mirror! But other than that I'm a pretty blunt person and I'm open about it. At times it may come off as a little stuck up so my friends started it as a joke… "here comes Vanity." So I started saying it back! VANITY…meaning I know who I am and I love me, if you don't like it so what! I'm too full of myself to care! I think everyone should put themselves second to God, love what's on the inside, and love appreciate what they were blessed with on the outside!

VH1access: Well thank you Shakyra for this interview. Do you want to give a shout out to anyone?

Shakyra: "NEW YORK… concrete jungle where things are made of!!!"
Ya know what? I thought that I was gonna walk off this show and be ridiculed, laughed at, or forgotten. And I was right BUT I forgot how much I love my city… and damn it my city loves me back! I appreciate all of the fan mail from folks that support my decision… "Brooklyn stand up! ...thats the chick that flipped the script!" Never felt so loved. Thanks everyone, I will continue to rep my hometown well!
And John shout out to you too boo, I see you hooking me up with the retweets! LOL
Oh to all the hotties w/ the bodies… I'M SINGLE!!!!!

LOS ANGELESJan. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- This season of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" has viewers riveted with the most explosive, intriguing and therapy-resistant cast to date for Dr. Drew's hit VH1 reality series.  During the season, personal revelations were made, obstacles overcome and for many, addictions kicked.  However, several months have passed since the cameras rolled and recorded their recovery process.  Many wonder, what has happened to the cast since their challenging time with Dr. Drew?  Fans will now get the chance to catch up with cast of the show post-rehab to see what it really takes to stay sober outside the confines of a rehab facility.  The cast of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" makes a return visit to Dr. Drew and share their stories of courage and redemption and in some cases, relapse.  The hour-long special premieres Wednesday, January 26th at 10PM*.

Season four of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" follows the real-life experiences of eight diverse celebrity patients undergoing an intensive 21-day detoxification and treatment program at the Pasadena Recovery Center.  As they each struggle with their own demons in their quest to get well they must also do this amongst some other very strong personalities who create more hurdles for each other than a helping hand.  The cast, many who have been recent tabloid fodder even while they were in rehab includes: Eric Roberts (The Expendables), Jeremy London ("Party of Five," "7th Heaven"), Rachel Uchitel (Infamous Party Planner), Janice Dickinson ("The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency"), Leif Garrett (Musician), Frankie Lons (Keyshia Cole's Mother), Jason Wahler ("The Hills") and Jason Davis (Socialite).

Dr. Drew is a highly respected practicing MD, board certified in internal and addiction medicine who will once again give viewers an unflinching look at exactly how the rehab process works and what it feels like for participants.  Dr. Drew hopes to use his celebrity patients to humanize the process and show viewers that treatment is a viable way to break the cycle of addiction.

While most people know Dr. Drew as the host of the syndicated radio show Loveline and the MTV show of the same name, Dr. Drew is a medical doctor on staff at Huntington Hospital and assistant clinical professor of KECK USC School of Medicine.  His book, Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again (Harper-Collins,) is all about what treating addicts is like from a caretaker's perspective.  Dr. Drew co-authored the first academic study on celebrities and narcissism.  The study was published in the Journal of Research in Personality (Elsevier) in September 2006, and is the first systematic, empirical scholarly study of celebrity personality.  Additionally, he is a New York Times best selling author with his work The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America (Harper Collins).  Dr. Drew can also be seen as host of VH1's "Sober House" and "Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew" along with MTV's "Teen Mom" and "16 & Pregnant, Life After Labor."

VH1 Interviews Shaunie O' Neal on Episode 4

Shaunie talks about episode 4 of Basketball wives

Any thoughts on the disastrous Source shoot?
That was a hot mess. I think I handled it well. I was very patient. I couldn’t go off on anybody anyway, because the guy that was there had nothing to do with The Source. He had a regular 9-to-5 job and was there just for that day to be the runner. It wasn’t his fault and he was absolutely wonderful to us. The best part of it was that I had my own makeup girl and my own hair stylist so I was able to get my hair and makeup done for the day. That’s the only upside I can give you.

Did you ever end up rescheduling that shoot?
No, but from what I hear, they still do want to do something.

Was it worth it to pass up press like that?
Yes, absolutely. I don’t want to do anything half-assed. If I’m going to do it, if I’m going to be in some magazine, let’s do it right. Let’s make the best of it and make it gorgeous and beautiful. I’d rather be right than not.

It does strike me as a difficult position to be in: if you back out, you risk being labeled a diva, but if you stick with something that’s sub-par, then everyone makes fun of you.
Exactly: “What was she thinking?” I’ve probably been guilty of that, too. As a person looking at the pictures, you don’t think about all the people and opinions involved that turned something lackluster: you blame the person in the picture. I don’t think I was being  a diva, though. I could have walked in, seen that stuff and walked out. But I tried to work with it. Then when I started trying the stuff on, it was just like, “I can’t.” It wasn’t going to make a cute picture. It wasn’t workable. What’s funny is that I have a stylist friend in New York and she told me, “Sweetie, always bring your own shoes, just in case.” From now on, I will.

A few of our commenters seemed miffed that you gave Evelyn the details of Ashley’s party.
I think anybody would have done that. I had no idea they weren’t invited on purpose. Ashley was having an event, and we’d all met Ashley at the same time at the same place, so it was like, if I’m invited, I’m assuming everyone is. I don’t know her very well, either! We didn’t confer with each other regarding invites to her other charity event – we just all went. When Evelyn called me asking where it was, I wasn’t thinking that she didn’t get an invitation or the details or whatever.

I thought you were kidding around when you called it an “oversight.”
I know that she and Jenn had an uncomfortable moment at the last event, but as far as I knew she didn’t have a problem with Evelyn. If Jenn had said, “I wasn’t invited,” solo, I maybe would have thought back to the words she and Ashley had, but when Evelyn said it, it was just like, “Oh, come on.” It just really didn’t cross my mind that there’d be a problem.

When you asked Marlon to accompany you, you said the event could be “drama for a good cause,” which actually was the perfect way to put it.
After telling them the address and based off of Evelyn’s conversation, I had a feeling she was going to say something to Ashley. I didn’t think she’d come in fighting or embarrassing anyone, but I did think she’d go to the source and ask about it.

But then, the major drama that ended up happening had little to do with Evelyn: it was Tami and Jenn who blew up.
Who would have thought?

Did you have any sense that Tami had been carrying around resentment for what Jenn said about food stamps?
Never. She never mentioned it to me, even in the restaurant [where Jenn first said she'd never seen a food stamp]. Evelyn and I caught it because it was an uncomfortable comment to make, but she didn’t bring it up and I never thought we’d hear about it again.

Were you mortified during the course of this very loud, public melee?
Absolutely. Marlon and I were on the opposite side of the room and the voices just started raising. At one point, he was like, “Are you gonna get up and see what’s going on?” I was like, “Hell no!” I wanted no part of that. At one point, though, it got so loud and there was this echo inside this place. It stopped everything, everyone was staring and at that point, I didn’t want anyone to know that I knew them. But they’re my friends and I couldn’t just sit there. Someone was going to have to go to stop it. I tried to get Tami to walk away, which is a difficult task in itself. I did the best I could to get her out of there, but I had no idea what was wrong with her. I heard the food-stamps thing, but I’m like, really? You’re in here screaming and arguing over food stamps? Let’s just go. It didn’t dawn on me till after that she was drunk. I wasn’t watching her down drinks like that. But I did think that was the most ridiculous thing ever. I got Tami out of there and then apologized to Ashley. I was embarrassed. I told her, “I am so sorry about everything.” They didn’t air that, but Ashley can vouch for me that I apologized on behalf of everyone. That was so unnecessary, a hot ghetto mess and it shouldn’t have happened. When Tami took her shoes off and tried to physically go after Jenn, it hit an all-time low. I’m sure it was awesome to watch if you weren’t associated with them, but being there was mortifying. I love Tami to death, but she is no longer allowed to drink. We cut her off. There’s another thing that happens as a result of her drinking this season, and it’s another one of those times when it’s not even the place to drink a lot. Tami will be chug-a-lugging in the corner and we won’t even know it!

We saw you meeting with a distributor in advance of launching your shoe line. Where is that today?
That’s still in the works. I had originally picked a boot for fall of 2010, and we just weren’t able to get that done quickly enough for it to come out. So now it’s about going back to New York and picking the spring line. It’s still in the works and I’m trying to get it done by the end of this year for sure.

You said you were hands-on and then you proved it by getting on the floor and showing exactly what you wanted to do to a boot they showed you.
That’s me, though. I’m very particular and I really have a problem with not seeing the final result or not going through the process. It could be throwing a party or launching a shoe line. I want to be there for the process to make sure it’s right in my eyes. I go 110 percent in everything I do. That way, if something’s wrong with it, it’s my fault and I can’t blame anybody else.
